While Wasson's theory has garnered acclaim, it is not without its faults. Gordon Wasson first proposed his groundbreaking theory identifying Soma, the hallucinogenic sacrament of the Vedas, as the Amanita muscaria mushroom. Normally Philocybe is used as tea, I can imagine that they have made some drink, Soma perhaps, fermented it stays fresh longer, also tastes better than tea from pure mushroom. Philocybe is not poisonous and it doesent require vomiting or other processing unlike fly-agaric, what can destroy your inner organs. This can have been big problem when milk is hallucinogenic, same problem than wheat has had Claviceps purpurea, it has made whole village mad.
